Needs and Wants

There are many things in this life that we think we need. New house and a new car are the more mainstream examples but sometimes it can be a little bit more subtle than that.

It starts with being discontent with where you are. If you leave the door of unthankfulness open then the devil can stick his foot right in and make you question your circumstances.

"Wouldn't it be nice to get a new pair of boots?"

"These ladies on TikTok have the coolest Stanley cups."

"It sure would be nice to upgrade this part of the house and maybe the yard. "

You begin to slowly slip into discontentment which fully grown can cause depression, greed, and the sins of selfishness to take root in your heart.

This can lead you to be open to questioning God and how good He really is to you. You'll begin to feel sorry for yourself and think that God couldn't possibly care about you if you're living without the things you so desperately think you need to be happy. Maybe, if you stop and ask yourself why you'd want all these things. These hollow illusions of happiness promise to cover the wounded parts of your heart but in reality only make the bleeding worse. God in all reality is allowing these times of lack, whether real or just discontented, to drive you to Him.

If one could buy anything you wanted or needed at any given moment how soon would you wake up and realize that you completely forgot about God. We brought the broken mess of this world upon ourselves but glory and praise be to God that He can use it for our good. Driving us to the foot of the cross and relying on Him for every breath.

God is not stupid, He is aware of our true needs. He is also willing to provide what is best for us. It just might not always look the way we think it ought to. If you are God's child He will work everything together for your good. We, however, must humble ourselves and respect the fact that God's ways are higher than ours and we won't always understand how God is taking care of us. But it doesn't change the fact that He still is.

So yes it might be nice to go out and buy whatever your eyes may see first at the store or online, but bear in mind that these things are not everything. God knows what you need even before you think to ask. So trust that your Father will guide you and provide for your needs.

Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
