Have you ever really listened to the song "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" ? A particular line of the song has always stuck out to me, even when I was dead in sin. It goes "God and sinners reconcile ". This is the message that the angels sang that night so long ago and is the answer for the cure for humanity.
We've all been acquainted with the fallen state of man quite a lot in our lives. Whether that be sickness, sorrow, or death we're all given a heaping helping of it in our lives no matter who we are or where we came from. And we cannot escape the ever present hole in our spirit that longs for God.
I don't have many words to adequately express how broken this world is but without words we can all understand it. There is no need to even find them. Wars and famines, kidnappings and slavery, anything that our fiendish imaginations can come up with likely exists in some dark corner of this world.
Even the most polished of us stands woefully in lack in the presence of our holy Maker. Even the disciples asked "Then who can be saved?" in Matthew 19:25. To which Jesus replied, "With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." in verse twenty six. The only way we were to be redeemed from our sin was if God were to do something.
We must remember that God owed us no such redemption. In fact He had every right to scrap the whole project. We were guilty. Given food, water, and resources beyond our wildest imagination and we still chose to sin. God had more than fulfilled His end of things. We cannot even say that we'd have done any better, given a chance. We've all lied, cheated, stole and coveted what wasn't ours. God's law will tell you that much and God knew that.
In mercy so unmerited God decided to take on human form to reconcile us to Himself. With a love that we cannot ever be worthy of He went the extra mile so that we might have a relationship with Him. God took on our humanity, our pain, our grief and experienced it all, without sin, just so that He could be an adequate sacrifice for our sins.
As we again think of the message that the angels brought to the shepherds that night may it have more meaning for us. Apply the words to your life. God and sinners reconcile. God extends the invitation to you for reconciliation. Will you accept it this Christmas?
